What Happened
Eleven to twelve members were present through the January 20, 2026 meeting. Council adopted a large slate of committee reports and district motions without dissent, including several continued street-lighting-district hearings, a Public Works designation of the "James 'Jim' McBeth Square" intersection, funding for renovation of the Madrid Theatre in Council District 3, a six-month renewal of the reward offer in the unsolved murder of Aaron Shannon, a Chinatown Mobile Laundry Truck program funded by Council Member Eunisses Hernandez to address the neighborhood's lack of a laundromat, and a motion from Council Member Nithya Raman advancing planning and design funding for a Los Feliz Boulevard parkway cycle track and a protected Griffith Park roadway redesign for cyclists and pedestrians; Raman noted the Griffith Park project, originally billed as a "quick build," had taken years and grown more expensive due to what she called poor interdepartmental coordination.
Council also adopted, unanimously and as amended, a Rules, Elections and Intergovernmental Relations Committee ordinance requiring disclosure of ex parte communications between Charter Reform Commissioners and elected officials, sponsored by Council Member Monica Rodriguez, who said the amendment made violations civilly enforceable and asked that the underlying ordinance be scheduled for consideration the following week.
A Board of Police Commissioners request to accept a donation of three replacement LENCO armored vehicles for the LAPD Metropolitan Division (Item 35) passed 9-3, with Council Members Eunisses Hernandez, Ysabel Jurado, and Nithya Raman voting no. Hernandez called the item for a separate vote, but no floor debate preceded the roll call.
Public comment featured several speakers from Better Neighbors LA and allied tenant advocates urging the council to reject an Airbnb-backed "vacation rental ordinance" they said would expand short-term rentals by roughly 300% and further tighten the city's rental housing supply ahead of the 2028 Olympics, citing city estimates that over 60% of existing short-term rentals are already non-compliant with the 2019 home-sharing ordinance. Other commenters again pressed the council to remove Police Chief Jim McDonald over LAPD's role in ICE enforcement, and criticized the pace of Charter Reform Commission transparency reforms.
