WHAT HAPPENED
The Los Angeles City Council's May 29, 2026 meeting, held in the San Fernando Valley, was dominated by ceremonial presentations and a CalFresh Awareness Month discussion, with a light legislative agenda passed without dissent. Fourteen members were present.
UNANIMOUS ITEMS
The council adopted, without recorded dissent, Government Operations Committee reports authorizing interim-housing lease agreements with Hope the Mission at 7700-7724-7798 Van Nuys Boulevard in Council District 2 and at 8358 San Fernando Road (also known as 11080 Olinda Street) in Council District 6; a lease amendment for Los Angeles Housing Department office space at 6400 Laurel Canyon Boulevard; a first amendment to the city's overnight and second-day mail services contract with Southern Express International (doing business as Unishippers Los Angeles); and a new nonprofit lease with West Valley Homes Yes for city-owned office space at 13277 Van Nuys Boulevard, amended on the floor at Council Member Monica Rodriguez's request to correct the suite letter from "D" to "G." The council also adopted a motion by Council Members Imelda Padilla and Hugo Soto-Martinez designating the intersection of Chase Street and Van Nuys Boulevard as "Los Angeles Azules Square." The council noted that no further action was required on the annual budget resolution, since the council had already adopted the budget two days earlier.
PRESENTATIONS
Council Member John Lee presented a resolution honoring LAPD Detective Sharon Kim for solving the 2022 murder of 81-year-old Oak Ja Kim in Woodland Hills, a case with little initial physical evidence that Kim kept active for years before securing surveillance footage that helped close it. Lee also recognized Sierra Canyon High School's boys' and girls' basketball teams for each winning a CIF Open Division state championship, the first time a California school has swept both titles in the same season; associate head coach Chris Howe accepted on behalf of both teams.
Council Members Monica Rodriguez and Bob Blumenfield led a presentation marking the 40th anniversary of the LA Conservation Corps, which they said has trained more than 25,000 young adults, planted or distributed over 400,000 trees, and restored 9,000 acres of habitat since its 1986 founding, and which deployed crews after the Palisades and Eaton fires to clear fire fuel and stabilize hillsides. CEO Tamara Musac Bravo accepted on behalf of the organization.
Council Member Ysabel Jurado led a presentation recognizing May as CalFresh Awareness Month, with Community Investment for Families Department General Manager Abigail Marquez and Los Angeles County Department of Public Social Services representative Sophia Romero warning that federal changes taking effect under H.R. 1 threaten to push eligible households off CalFresh due to new reporting and renewal requirements. Marquez said the department's Family Source Centers serve 52,000 Angelenos annually, 25,000 of whom are enrolled in CalFresh and earn less than $23,000 a year, and that the county has 1.5 million CalFresh recipients overall.
PUBLIC COMMENT
Several speakers addressed pending business: a Van Nuys Neighborhood Council representative urged the council to support the Charter Reform Commission's proposed ballot measure raising the Recreation and Parks Department's share of assessed property value from 0.0325% to 0.06%, citing chronic understaffing since 2008. Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles attorney Barbara Schultz said Stay Housed LA contracts approved by the council in early March had lapsed on March 31 without renewal, forcing smaller service providers to furlough staff and halting rental assistance despite $17 million in unspent city funds. Two fast-food workers, employed at Taco Bell and McDonald's, urged the council to approve a pending fair-work ordinance for fast-food employees, citing unstable scheduling and hour cuts. A Granada Hills resident pressed Council Member John Lee for information on wildfire evacuation routes near a proposed 98-unit elder and memory-care facility at 17531 Rinaldi Street in a very high fire hazard severity zone.
CLOSING
The council adjourned in memory of Olga "Heidi" Barragan, a Harbor-area labor community member and co-founder of the Wilmington Labor Day Parade, who died April 27, 2026 at age 59; Council Member Tim McOsker delivered the tribute. Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson also announced the death of Bill Burke, saying a formal adjourning motion would follow the next week.
